Post-Art

April 30, 2010 by studio360writer

Post-its – those handy little sticky notes – turn 30 this year.  To celebrate the milestone, 3M is inviting young people aged 11 – 18 to create Post-it art.  The winner will work with an artist to create the world’s largest billboard made entirely of Post-it notes.  It will be displayed in Vanderbilt Hall at New York’s Grand Central Station in August 2010.

Both contest and prize seem appropriate; Post-its have often been used as a medium to channel artistic expression…

Here Post-its are arranged on a four-story canvas to recreate a classic Nintendo game.

This mural is actually a mosaic of individual, community-generated to-do notes.

In a pinch, you can also use them to redecorate your home.

The deadline for the contest is June 4, 2010.

And if you feel like you might need some background for your Post-It art, check out Studio 360′s post-it sized profile of the Post-It, provided by Paola Antonelli, design curator at the Museum of Modern Art.

The last pic is the best. It looks so vibrant and no one can make out what it is made up of unless told.

Ahh I love to see that the Donkey Kong ‘mural’ is still getting exposure. I saw all the work my friends put into creating that mural while I was working in the building. It took a LONG time.

Great idea: post-it = pixel. Possibilities are endless. Cool blog.

I am forever amazed at the creativity people demonstrate with the most mundane and taken-for-granted items from our daily lives. I hope kids jump all over this. Will be interesting to see what they come up with. Nice post.

This is new to me aswell. Is so cool how people can create art with whatever is around them, and this is a great example about that. I love the pics! =D

Wow sticky notes can look great, as proven by these pictures. They are also very good for jotting down quick thoughts and ideas or reminders.

    Extremely useful.

“Post-art”, in and by it self, may very well be a legitimate art form. What 3M does here, however, is just a cheap gimmick, which lowers my opinion of it—the post-it version of American Idol.

Everyone uses post-its. They are so handy. Thanks for informing us.

Wow… that’s great. But the competition is only for teenager ya? hmm… it means I cant participate. Too bad. But the pictures here has already shown high level of creativity -especially the one that used as home decoration. Bright colours, nice composition and combination. Just great.

Austin Kleon made good use of them documenting SXSW recently – pre drew the stage, then changed the notes to draw each speaker.

This is amazing. One time in high school some friends and I covered someone’s car in post-it notes so when he came out of track practice, he thought his car had been stolen. It may have even been worth the 90 minutes it took us to cover the car. :)

Very, VERY compelling and inspiring work. There is often a certain quality to work like this that people miss, which is sad.

Post-it is probably one of the most brilliant invention in human history. It shows you how small things can actually have a big impact to our life and make our life easier.

  47. on May 25, 2010 at 1:25 am michaeleriksson

Actually, I would consider the post-it one of the most trivial inventions in human history. I have written a few articles of my own on the topic of inventions. (Notably Not all ideas that glitter are gold. Note, however, that “gold” does not refer to money-making ability, but level of brilliance—and that the two are only weakly correlated.) Often, invention is just a matter of being the right person in the right place at the right time, the right person encountering a particular problem, or similar.

Going from margin notes, bookmarks, pieces of paper affixed with scotch tape (another 3M product), and stickers of various kinds to post-its is a near trivial step on the conceptual level. In all likelihood there had already been hundreds of people who had wistfully imagined such a product before it was actually and officially invented. The implementation may still have been tricky: Finding a glue that is sufficiently adhesive while still allowing a later removal without side-effects—that may well have required some considerable research. (Unless already present, in which case the invention becomes even more trivial.) However, in the end, this is just an implementation detail.
